Industry Training Programs
Burnaby School District's Industry Training Career Programs options provide Grade 11 and 12 students with the opportunity to develop "on the job" skills and knowledge while earnng graduation credits and industry standard training. In all the program options, students receive in-class training and work experience. Students can then choose to pursue work in the industry or a post-secondary education in their chosen career.
- open to students in Grades 11 or 12, 15 years of age or older
- taught in a specific Burnaby secondary school or at a post secondary institution
- formal Application Process is required:
- Students apply through their home school and submit a completed Application Package

- Applications are screened at the school and district levels
- Accepted candidates and parents are invited to a program information session

Five Types of Programs, 18 Career Options:
Burnaby offers five types of programs: 1. Transition to Trades, 2. Ace-it, 3. Industry Certification, 4. Industry Connect and 5. Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA).
Transition to Trades Training for Grade 10 or 11 Students
- Open to students entering Grades 10 and 11, 15 years of age or older

Combines academic studies and trades exploration elective courses leading to secondary school graduation. Some of the trades areas that will be explored are:
- Mechanics , Metalwork, Welding, Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing
Benefits to students to participate:
- Learn about careers in apprenticeship
- Learn job-ready skills
- Gain hands-on experience in various trades areas
- Work with other students in a team environment
- Have a smaller number of teachers
- Gain graduation credits
- Participate in your chosen trade area of interest

Accelerated Credit Enrollment in Industry Training (ACE-IT)
The ACE-IT programs provide students with the opportunity to earn graduation credits and training in their chosen industry. Students participate in post secondary / Apprenticeship Level 1 Technical Training. Students are registered as a trainee with the Industry Training Authority (ITA). Students participate in a combination of coursework and work experinece leading to graduation and recognized industry certification. Students also acquire the job-ready skills necessary to entering the industry or pursuing further training in their industry.

Auto Collision Repair Technician (Partnership with Vancouver Community College)
Students receive education and training in the fundamentals of auto collision repair in preparation for apprenticeship, and the opportunity to receive their Certificate of Entry Level Trades Training. Work in this industry includes: autobody repair, refinishing and applied mechanical systems.

Auto Refinishing & Prep Technician (Partnership with Vancouver Community College)
Students receive education and training in the fundamentals of auto refinishing and preparation to get ready for an apprenticeship, and the opportunity to receive their Certificate of Entry Level Trades Training. Work in this industry includes: preparing vehicles for paint application, including masking, sanding and priming.

Auto Service Technician Program (Cariboo Hill Secondary School)
Students receive education and training in the fundamentals of auto refinishing and preparation to get ready for an apprenticeship, and the opportunity to receive a certificate upon passing the Apprenticeship Level 1 Technical Training examination. Work in this industry includes: repairing, adjusting and replacing mechanical and electrical parts of automobiles and light trucks.

Carpentry Program (Cariboo Hill Secondary School)
Students will take first steps to entering the construction industry. They receive technical training in safe working practices, drawing and specification interpretation, materials identification and the use of various types of tools. The course also involves understanding of the carpentry trade, as well as site layout, the building of concrete formwork, and residential house framing. Graduates have the opportunity to receive their Apprenticeship Technical Training Certification Level 1.

- Construction Electrician Program (Burnaby Mountain)
Students receive education and training in the fundamentals of electrical installation, repair and maintenance in construction trades, and prepare for apprenticeship. Graduates have the opportunity to receive their Level 1 Technical Training Certification.

- Cook Training Program (Burnaby Central)
Students receive education and training in the fundamentals of food preparation, including safety and sanitation, equipment operation, and basic food service skills. Students who complete all components of the program write the Level 1 Technical Examination. Complete the Apprenticeship Technical Training Level 1 - Certificate of Qualification. Articulation agreement with Douglas College Hotel and the Restaurant Managment Program. Or have easy transition to Apprenticeship Technical Training Level 2.

Hairstylist (2 yrs) (Alpha Secondary)
Students receive a combination of theory and practical, hands-on experience. Certificate of Qualification Practical exam eligibility after 3600 work-based training hours. Student may have the opportunity to apprentice in a salon while continuing their education.

- Plumbing Program (Annacis Island)
This 6-week ACE-IT Plumbing Program provides students with a unique opportunity to earn graduation credits, post-secondary training, and your Apprenticeship Technical Training Certification Level 1. Easy transition to Apprenticeship Training Level 2.

- Metal Fabrication Program (BCIT)
This 6-month ACE-IT Steel Fabrication Program deals with high-end metal work, designing and building (eg. Painting & Decorating - Level 1 (Finishing Trades Institute FTI)
- In Level 1, apprentices gain an understanding of the painting industry as a whole. They are introduced to common coatings, surface prepraration, and the toolds used inthe trade, including the airless spray. An extensive safety program includes respirator training, fall protection, ladder and scaffold training, elevated platform training, and WHMIS.

Industry Certification
- Computer Networking Technician Program (1 yr) -Industry Certification (Burnaby South) Started Sept 2009- Students work towards CompTIA A+ Certification and a Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator credential (MCSA), qualifying them to implement, manage and troubleshoot existing computer network and system environments. Work in this industry centers around managing, repairing and troubleshooting system environments. Articulation agreement with BCIT.

- Fitness Leadership Instructor (1 yr) (Alpha)
Students receive a combination of theory and practical experience. They will perform the Instructor Competency Evaluation (ICE) and may be recommended for registration as a Fitness Leader with BC Parks and Recreation. Credit for Douglas College course: Conditioning for Sport & Physical Activity (SPSC 1103). Articulation agreement with Douglas College with a possilbe option for a 2-year diploma or Sports Science Degree.

- Hotel and Event Management (1 yr) (Burnaby Mountain)
Students will take steps to achieving entry-level certification in the Hospitality Industry by focusing on the completion of courses developed by the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Students have the opportunity to earn six different industry standard certifications: 3 certificates from the American Hotel and Lodging Association (1. Supervision in Hospitality Industry, 2. Convention Management, 3. Front Office Operations Management), 4. Food Safe Level 1, 5. Superhost, 6. Serving it Right. Hospitality staff are usually employed in the Hotel and Lodging Industry to manage all aspects of guest services. Articulation agreement with Douglas College and the Hotel and Restaurant Managment Program.

Digital Sound Production and Recording (Burnaby North Secondary)
The 1-year Industry Connect Digital Sound Production and Recording Program prepares students for post-secondary programs and or entry level positions in the music, sound engineering, film, or television industries. Film and Broadcasting (Burnaby North Secondary)
The 1-year Industry Connect Film & Broadcast Program prepares students for post-secondary programs and/or entry level positions in the film or broadcast idustries. Courses prepare students to be on set, in the production office, the editing room and post-production facility. Articulation agreement with BCIT - Broadcast Journalism Program.

- Graphics/Media Arts (Byrne Creek Secondary)
The 1-year Graphics/Media Arts Program provides students with a unique opportunity to earn graduation credits and post-secondary credits. Course work will include training in: Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, Flash MX and Pro-tools sound editing.
