Learning Support
The Learning Support Services Department includes: ESL, Course Support, Alternate Education, Pre-Employment, and ACCESS. Please contact Mrs. Ng if you have any questions regarding the programs.
ESL
Students complete ESL courses as well as regular academic courses suitable for their English language level. The levels of ESL are offered: one, two, three and language adapted. ESL level 1 students take four ESL classes: Science, Canadian Studies, Grammar and Poetry as well as elective courses appropriate to each student’s interest and age level. ESL level two students take three ESL classes and a block of science in the mainstream. ESL level 3 students take: Social Studies Language Adapted, English Language Adapted classes in the mainstream.
Course Support
Course Support is a non credit course. Enrolment in Course Support can be made through self referrals or teacher and parent recommendations. Students intending to take Course Support should arrive with all necessary materials in order to use the time effectively. Academic support is provided by a Teacher, Educational Assistant, or Peer Tutor.
Alternate Education
Students enrolled in Alt. Ed. have behavioural challenges that prevent them from being successful in a regular classroom setting. Enrolment in Alt. Ed. is determined through the School Based Team with parent and student consultation. Assignments are adapted to meet the learning needs of the students in Alt. Ed.
Pre-Employment Program
Pre-Employment is a program designed to meet the needs of students with unique learning challenges. Enrolment in PEP is determined through parent, teacher, student, and counsellor consultation. Students in PEP are provided with opportunities to develop skills to be successful in the work place. Students in PEP will likely earn a School Leaving Certificate rather than a Dogwood Diploma.
Access Program
Students enrolled in ACCESS have a profile of significant cognitive or physical challenges that require one-to-one assistance. Students in ACCESS are provided with opportunities to develop functional life skills within the school and community.
Peer Tutoring
Peer Tutoring is a senior level course designed to provide students an opportunity to work with junior students in the Course Support setting. Peer Tutors are assigned to a block of Course Support and work one on one with students who require assistance with homework and organization. The Peer Tutor course is a credited course that counts toward graduation. Students interested in becoming a peer tutor should be self motived and wanting to help others. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Ng in room 332.
