Dance Program News
Choreography 11 / 12
We are excited to be offering Choreography 11 and 12 for the first time this school year (2009/2010). We have several students registered in these courses at this time but not a full class size so students will work within the existing framework of the dance program to develop as choreographers. Last December we showcased the work of 11 student choreographers. It is fascinating to see what each individual creates and I look forward to supporting their learning in this area. There is a textbook called ‘Dance Composition’ by Janice Pomer, published in 2009! Students will use artistic journalling to reflect upon themes and ideas and to keep a record of their choreographic studies throughout the year from the pre-planning exploratory stage right through to the reflective artistic response at the end of the dance creation.
Grade Eights
A special welcome to the new grade 8 dancers who will be joining our ranks in September. Wear something loose and comfortable to your first day of class, bring a water bottle and we’ll see you in class for a great year of dancing! We will likely have two performance evenings in our studio in early December and our larger year end show will be held in May 2010.
Photography in Dance
Our dance and photography units are very popular with students and we usually come out of that with several hundred wild and wonderful dance photos of student dancers. This year we will try to showcase some of this fabulous work in a show of some sort. Maybe you didn’t know that a group of grade eight student photographer/dancers won first place in Burnaby’s “Dare to Excel” category in a photography contest out of Shadbolt Center last year for their ‘Dancing in the Snow’ photos. Those photos hang on the studio wall if you’d like to check that out sometime.
Extra-Curricular Groups
Starting in the 2009/2010 school year, extra curricular dance groups must be registered in dance program in order to be able to use the studio and have Ms Kay sponsor your group. Last year Ms Kay sponsored 5 extra curricular dance groups outside of dance program and has learned that her efforts MUST go to promoting the students in dance program. If you love to dance then sign up for dance and be a part of what’s happening in the program in your own way. Our program has grown to the point where there is high demand for studio time after school. There will be a junior and separate senior dance squad next year as well as a company class of auditioned dance program dancers from gr. 8 – 12. If you are in dance program and you’d like to see Latin or Bhangra or tap extra curricular group then visit your friendly dance studio teacher and chat about it! Every good idea starts somewhere and maybe your idea is a good one for a dance group!
Overnighter!
We’ve just had a fieldtrip proposal approved at the Board level for an overnight trip to Seattle to see the musical “Wicked”. Combined bus and hotel and musical theatre ticket cost, it will cost $200. Students can apply to attend in September, if they are in senior dance class gr. 10 – 12. We will leave by bus 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning, October 3rd and return Sunday afternoon on October 4th. If you fit the criteria then save some money over the summer. If you saved $50 a month for June, July, August and September then you’d have savings ready to go by October! Not a bad idea is it?
