Student Union of Moscrop
| A Proposal for the S.U.M. |
| “We have a stake in one another ... what binds us together is greater than what drives us apart ... if enough people believe in the truth of that proposition and act upon it, then we might not solve every problem, but we can get something meaningful done for the people with whom we share this Earth.” -Barack Obama |
Our Objective
To unite all Moscrop Action Clubs in a collective effort, that ensures the success of several cause-related events throughout the year.
Background
At Moscrop, there are a variety of different clubs and students in the school who are advocating for legitimate and whole hearted causes and have achieved somewhat effective results. However, what limits these results is the fact that since there are so many different clubs with so many different events; it leaves clubs with a lack of attention for their cause. Last year alone there were 25 clubs that were notable enough to be put in the yearbook and many others such as Its a Colourful World and Paws for a Cause were just beginning to operate near the end of the year. Unlike other schools in the District, such as Burnaby North, whose entire student body rallies around the combined force of one or two organizations, our potential for productivity has been thinned by a vast spreading of resources. Our proactive forces have become segregated from each other, each fighting a war in the hallways and over the PA trying to make sure their voice is heard. As a result the majority of the school’s population has simply chosen to ignore the constant bombardment of valuable information. Of course this is quite inevitable in a school like Moscrop; where there aren’t just a few leaders, but rather several throughout each grade. In fact this is not at all a bad system, just an incomplete one. All that it is missing in this mosaic -that is Moscrop- is the piece that puts all the other pieces together.
The S.U.M. Organization
The S.U.M., Student Union of Moscrop, would be a coalition of several passionate clubs with similar aspirations. Such an organization would be able to pull together resources of many clubs in order to target and tackle each cause one at a time, in unison. This kind of system would be very easy to implement especially at Moscrop, because so many of our clubs already have objectives that are interconnected with one another. For example Recycling Club, Global Sense, and the UN Club are all concerned with the environment, while Global Action Against Poverty, Counter Attack, Mind Over Autism, the UN Club, and It’s a Colourful World are all concerned with improving social conditions for humanity. It would make much more sense if these clubs worked together, and put together their resources (volunteers, funds, etc.), than to be in constant rivalry to earn a reputation around the school.
Members of the S.U.M. should not be worried about losing their individuality or autonomy. On the contrary, only through such a union can their voice truly be heard. Take for example the United Nations: Member countries have not by any means been consumed by this organization, they still maintain their sovereignty. The only thing that has changed is the fact that they can take more decisive actions on a world stage, and have a common flag to fight under.
Implementation
In the SUM, leaders and/or representatives from every Moscrop Action Club (clubs that dedicate themselves to a cause) would meet once every two weeks to plan major projects that they will undertake. Some projects that we would like to see done include: implementing the DEW energy saving system in our school, and to raise enough money to fund the building of a well or school in Africa. Though these goals do seem highly ambitious at first, through retrospect it is within our capabilities, and in fact has been done before. Burnaby Central has raised enough money to build two fully supplied schools within a span of three and a half years. If they can do it, why can’t we? It only cost approximately $7000 for each school they had built. Our very own Recycling Club raised $2000 last year with only few dedicated members, and this money has been idle, waiting for a legitimate cause. This year’s estimate is about $2500, which would make a total of $4500 from Recycling Club alone. This leaves only $2500, a sum that can be easily attained under the guidance of the SUM! It is no longer a matter of what we as Moscropians can do, but what we will do!
Thank you very much for taking your valuable time to read this proposal. We hope that this it has helped you understand our vision of perfecting our school. For too long have we Moscropians been overlooked, though our high ambitions and aspirations have been no less meaningful than others. It is time that Moscrop had its share of glory in this district!
