American Born Chinese
Gene Luen Yang
American Born Chinese tells the story of Jin Wang, a son of Chinese immigrants, who struggles to assimilate at a predominately white school after moving from San Francisco's Chinatown to the suburbs. Jin's story is interwoven with the legend of the Chinese folk hero Monkey King, and a sitcom starring buck-toothed Chinese stereotype Cousin Chin-Kee. This is a graphic novel.
The Attack
Khandra Yasmina
From the graphic, beautifully rendered description of the bombing that opens the novel to the searing conclusion, The Attack portrays the reality of terrorism and its incalculable spiritual costs. Intense and humane, devoid of political bias, hatred, and polemics, it probes deep inside the Muslim world and gives readers a profound understanding of what seems impossible to understand. This is available in French and English.
The Book Thief
Markus Zusak
In this dark and powerfully absorbing novel, Death narrates “just a small story, really.” It turns out to be the story of “the book thief,” Liesel Meminger, her foster family, neighbourhood friends, a Jewish amateur prizefighter in hiding, and a world gone mad with a global war and the horrors of the Holocaust. The Grim Reaper’s riveting tale goes far beyond “just a small story”, and every page deserves to be read.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald
A humorous and touching journey that reveals what it's like to be born old and age in reverse. This is available in French, English and as a graphic novel.
Here, There Be Dragons
James A. Owen
An unusual murder brings together three strangers, John, Jack, and Charles, on a rainy night in London during the first World War. An eccentric little man called Bert tells them that they are now the caretakers of the Imaginarium Geographica -- an atlas of all the lands that have ever existed in myth and legend, fable and fairy tale. These lands, Bert claims, can be traveled to in his ship the Indigo Dragon, one of only seven vessels that is able to cross the Frontier between worlds into the Archipelago of Dreams.
Magic Kingdom For Sale - SOLD
Terry Brooks
After Ben Holiday purchased Landover, he discovered the magic kingdom had some problems. The Barons refused to recognize a king and the peasants were without hope. To make matters worse, Ben learned that he had to duel to the death with the Iron Mask, the terrible lord of the demons--a duel which no human could hope to win.... Available in French and English.
My Sister’s Keeper
Jodi Picoult
My Sister''s Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister''s Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.
The Secret Life of Bees
Sue Monk Kidd
A young girl's search for the truth about her mother leads her to three beekeeping sisters who take her into their mesmerizing world of bees and honey and of a mysterious Black Madonna. A novel about mothers and daughters and the women in our lives who become our true mothers. A story about the divine power of women and the transforming power of love. Available in French and English.
Three Cups of Tea
Greg Mortenson
Some failures lead to phenomenal successes, and this American nurse's unsuccessful attempt to climb K2, the world's second tallest mountain, is one of them. Dangerously ill when he finished his climb in 1993, Mortenson was sheltered for seven weeks by the small Pakistani village of Korphe; in return, he promised to build the impoverished town's first school, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has since constructed more than 50 schools across rural Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Volkswagen Blues
Jacques Poulin
In this classic road novel, Jacques Poulin tells the story of Jack, a man in search of his brother. In a Volkswagen van, he travels east from Montreal to the Gaspé, then west and south to St. Louis and then farther south and farther west. Early in his travels, Jack picks up a hitchhiking woman who becomes his travelling companion. The geographical journey --through Detroit, into Chicago, on to St. Louis, along the Oregon Trail, and into California - becomes a metaphor for the history of the French in North America. Available in French and English.
