The department of learning support services is pleased to offer the following programming for students at Moscrop Secondary.  Learning support services offers Course Support, Alternate Education, Pre-Employment Program, Access Program, and LSS Programs for English, Science, Socials, and Math.  Enrollment in the above programs should be done in consultation with the Department Head, Counselors, Grade Seven Teachers, Parents, and Elementary Resource Teachers.  Please read the following descriptions closely when trying to decide if any of the programs above would provide further opportunities for success for your student or child.

Adapted Academic Programs

Students placed in Adapted Programs for Math, English, Science, and Social Studies have a history of learning difficulties and require changes to the format of instruction and assessment.  The students in the Adapted Program will have had learning assistance for reading and math in the Elementary School setting and are reading below grade level expectations.  Enrollment in the Adapted Program is recommended for students who will be successful in a regular classroom setting with extra assistance and considerations to homework load and assessments.  Students placed in the Adapted Program will graduate with a Dogwood Diploma and will qualify for entrance into College or University.

Course Support

Course Support is a non-credit course and is usually taken in place of a language course. Course Support should only be considered for students who have difficulty completing homework assignments on their own.  Students intending to enroll in Course Support should be prepared to bring homework materials and write their daily homework assignments in their planners.  A Resource Teacher and an Educational Assistant are available to assist with clarification of instructions, completion of homework assignments, organization of materials, and re-teaching concepts.

Peer Tutors

Peer Tutors are assigned to a Course Support block or LSS class. Tutors provide one to one assistance to students who require help with homework and organization. The Peer Tutor Program is a credited course that counts towards graduation for the senior students. Interested sutdents in becoming a Peer Tutor for the next school year will need to see Ms. Ng for an application form.

LSS Programs

Students placed in the LSS Programs for Math, Science, English, and Social Studies have a history of significant learning challenges and difficulty with written output.  The LSS classes are designed to best facilitate students who have Ministry designations and require significant adaptations to teaching practices and evaluation.  Students may enroll in one or more of the LSS classes, but they are not required to enroll in all LSS classes.  Students enrolled in the LSS program for all four subject areas will not be eligible to enroll in a Course Support block.  Students in the LSS program require a streamlined curriculum and small class sizes in order to receive more direct one-on-one assistance.  The LSS Program is designed to provide maximum support for students who are reading well below grade level.   Students in the LSS program are eligible for graduation with a Dogwood Diploma.

Pre-Employment Program

Students placed in the Pre-Employment program have a profile of significant learning challenges that prevent successful completion of the Adapted or LSS Programs to meet graduation requirements.  Students in the Pre-Employment program are provided with opportunities to develop functional math and reading skills in order to be successful in the work force.  Students in the Pre-Employment Program will likely earn a School Leaving Certificate rather than a Dogwood Diploma.

Access Program

Students placed in the Access Program have a profile of significant cognitive and or physical challenges that require one to one assistance throughout the day.  The students are placed in elective courses and complete functional reading and math programs within the Access classroom.  The students enrolled in the Access Program will require a transition plan from elementary to secondary school. This plan will be organized by the resource teachers from both schools.

Alternate Ed. Placements

Students placed in Alt. Ed. Programs have a profile of non-compliance and difficulty connecting to expectations of a regular classroom.  Participants are usually of average to above average intelligence and are capable of working independently.  Students are expected to graduate with a Dogwood Diploma.

The academic focus is Ministry equivalency in the four main academic subjects:  English, Math, Science, and Socials Studies.  If behaviours are too problematic for regular class placements, the Senior Alt. Ed. Program becomes half time only, however, every effort is made to accommodate full time attendance in the Junior Alt. Program.  In order to gain admission into the Alt. Ed. Program, students and families will be required to complete an intake interview and sign attendance and behaviour contracts at the start of the school year.  Please contact Ms. Ng at cessy.ng@sd41.bc.ca
