Victoria Trip
Despite the gloomy weather, students had a great time on this fieldtrip!
The fieldtrip started off bright and early at 7:30am! This was the beginning of a very busy day. When students arrived in Victoria, their first stop was the University of Victoria. At the university, the students listened to an exciting presentation about the Commerce, Co-op and International exchange programs offered at UVic. Students had a quick catered lunch at the university before heading off on a campus tour. The weather gods were on our side as the rain eased off while the students were walking around the beautiful campus. The students were very happy with their free UVic Commerce program shirts!
Our second stop of the day was the Empress Hotel. After dropping off their back packs, hotel employees took the students around the hotel and talked a bit about the history of the hotel and about business operations. Students were even able to go “behind the scenes” and view various business offices. Sampling the pastries in the hotel’s pastry kitchen was perhaps a highlight of the tour after the hotel’s beautiful Christmas tree displays of course!
Friday evening was very relaxing. Students were given free time to explore downtown Victoria, have dinner and some even went to go swimming. In addition to these evening activities, students also examined the Christmas tree displays and completed a scavenger hunt.
The day started out with a nice breakfast at the Empress hotel. Hotel employees had a hard time keeping up with our food refills as our students were very hungry! After breakfast, students went on a Grayline bus tour where they were given a thorough introduction to the city of Victoria. Students even got a chance to stop at the Oak Bay Marina to feed some wild seals!
The fieldtrip was a huge success! A big thank you goes out to Mr. Ashfield, Mr. Chang, Ms. A. MacKenzie, Ms. Spence and Ms. Wispinski for volunteering their time to supervise this fieldtrip! Ms. Cho hopes to offer the same fieldtrip again next year!
Career Fair Field Trip
It took Ms. Cho a long time to figure out an exciting and fun but at the same time educational fieldtrip for her Accounting 11 students. The idea finally came to her!
On February 3rd, students went to the Vancouver Education and Career Fair which is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre in downtown Vancouver. With the due date for the course selection forms just around the corner, students got an opportunity to find out what Grade 12 courses were needed for programs at different post secondary institutions.
As part of their assignment for the day, Accounting 11 students had to visit at least two booths and listen to a Creative Accounting Seminar given by the Certified Management Accountants Association.
After the career fair, students had the opportunity to have lunch together at Shabusen Japanese Restaurant. Luckily the restaurant has an all-you-can-eat menu. The students were very hungry! The fieldtrip was a huge success! Students had a great time and got a chance to learn about careers and post secondary admission requirements. The nice sunny weather was a big bonus!
A big thank-you to Ms. Wispinski and Mrs. Spence for volunteering to come on this fieldtrip!
Junior Achievement Investment Strategies Showdown
Ms. Cho’s Business Education 10 students have been busy competing in an online stock market stimulation competition with high school students all over B.C. Alberta and Ontario! As part of this program, students also got to learn about the stock market and various investments from an expert guest speaker. Moscrop was lucky to have Trevor Palmquist from the Bank of Montreal come in to give the students some expert advice. Thank you Trevor and good luck to all the students participating in the competition!
BCIT Student Initiative Showdown
This business competition is well on its way! Moscrop now has only one team still in the competition. Bryan Cheah, Nathan Mach, Andy Tsao, Homond Tang and Albert Chui are the founders of PingPoPo. PingPoPo (the student’s business) sells fresh stir-fried noodles with vegetables and meat as well as egg waffles (a popular asian snack). The business made their first appearance at the school’s Taste of Asia event and despite the competition of free food, the students made $200 that evening.
As part of the competition, the boys have two business student mentors from BCIT, Toan Dang and Kemp Edmonds, working with them. They have also attended weekend workshops on business planning, presentations, budgeting and financing. Thank you Moscrop for all your support and look out for PingPoPo sales in the near future.
