Biology 12 Outline

2008- 09
Mr. Callister

This is a fast-moving course that extends on the regular Biology 12 curriculum while also covering a more vast range of topics. Through regular study habits it will prepare students for both the Biology 12 Provincial Exam and the AP exam which, if written successfully, can be used as a university credit.

Due to the abundance of material, memorization of terms is generally not the key to success in a course like this. Understanding concepts and how terms (and other concepts) can be linked to them is a much more productive method for material comprehension and retention.

AP study guides are available to purchase. These provide a good general overview for clarification of concepts for but don't go in depth to explain/link key terms and processes.

Students must take responsibility for their own work and learning!
  • If students miss a class they must come and see me the next school day in order to make up missed work.
  • If students miss a test/assignment they must come with a note and be prepared to complete this on the first day back at school.  A completed late form must also be attached.
  • If students are aware that they will miss work due to absence they must make arrangements with me prior to that day as to when it will be completed.
  • Homework may be checked. If it is incomplete/absent a mark of zero will be assigned. No marks will be given for late homework.
  • 25% will be lost each school calendar day on late assignments

Challenge Exams

  • University of Toronto National Biology Competition

This exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions and is written in May. It has an entrance cost of $5.00, covers a wide range of concepts in biology and offers scholarships and prize money for the top students. See http://www.biocomp.utoronto.ca/ for more information and previous contests.

  • Biology AP Exam

This exam is written in May and consists of an intensive 120 multiple choice section and 4 short response questions. There is a cost of $120 for students writing this exam but those receiving a mark of 4 out of 5 or above can use this in place of taking first year biology at most universities. Students writing this exam will be expected to attend tutorials and perform set labs in order to validate their omission from first year biology.
